Insights in the Seventh Commandment

“Thou shalt not commit adultery.” Exodus 20:14

The family is the fundamental building block of society. The marriage vow between a man and woman is a holy covenant that should not be violated by sexual unfaithfulness under any circumstances. This commandment is designed to protect the institution of the family.

Like the previous commandment, the heart of this commandment was addressed by Jesus in the New Testament:

“Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart” (Matthew 5:27-28).

Violation of this commandment is rampant today. There is a spirit of unbridled lust that consumes our land. It is a cancer that chokes the life from a healthy family, church, and nation. The climate is ripe for many to be enslaved to moral bondage. There is a conditioning by society through entertainment, media, and advertising to accept moral compromise.

Divorce, pornography, child abuse, and many other socially destructive evils are a result of breaking this commandment in our hearts.

“Marriage should be honored by everyone, and husband and wife should keep their marriage pure. God will judge as guilty those who take part in sexual sins” (Hebrews 12:4). -NCV
